Firsts come back in last 5 minutes to beat Lyndhurst 5-3
Hampshire League 2004
Lyndhurst FC 3 - 5 Four Marks FC
Paul Raymont
Michael Heffernan
Andrew King (3)
Four Marks travelled to Lyndhurst missing key players due to illness and injury. Four Marks knew this was not going to be an easy game and added to this Four Marks were greeted with a wet and boggy pitch.
Lyndhurst started the brighter of the two teams and created more of the early opportunities, hitting the crossbar as early as the third minute. This pressure paid off as three minutes later Lyndhurst put themselves in front, sparking off Four Marks to begin to play football. Gary Chapman and Paul Raymont began to cause the Lyndhurst fullbacks problems with their pace and ability. In the 9th minute Four Marks produced a five man passing move which cut through the Lyndhurst defence ending with Raymont putting the ball into the back of the net to level the game, the remainder of the half was fairly evenly matched with both teams creating chances, the Four Marks chances were more clear cut with Michael Heffernan having the better of them but the ball would not go into the back of the net.
The second half started better for Marks, straight from the kick off Paul Raymont crossed the ball from the right wing Mark Heffernan coolly volleyed the ball to King who smashed the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the six yard box to put Four Marks ahead. At this point the game became stretched with neither team really keeping any shape. Lyndhurst started to create chances and in the 70th minute equalised. With both teams going for the win gaps were appearing all over the pitch. In the 85th minute Lyndhurst’s constant pressure resulted in them scoring a third. At this point they thought they had won the game. Marks’ work ethic and determination to play for 90 minutes was overwhelming for Lyndhurst. On the 88th minute confusion in the Lyndhurst box allowed King to receive the ball on the edge of the 18 yard box from which he lobbed the keeper to bring the game level. Marks’ knew that nothing but a win would be good enough from today’s game so piled on the pressure. On the 89th minute Mark Heffernan played a measured ball to Michael Heffernan who beat the off side trap to slot the ball home past the oncoming keeper. One minute later King scored his third goal of the game to cement the win for Four Marks and leave Lyndhurst wondering what happened.
This was not Four Marks finest display of football but team spirit and determination played a massive part in them retaining their top spot in the league.
