Vets get off to winning ways
Farnham and District Veterans League - Division 2
Mytchett Athletic Vets 0 - 2 Four Marks Vets
The first League game of the season saw a familiar start, an early goal with the defence opening up to allow a clean strike on goal. The difference this season though, was that it was Four Marks that opened the scoring with Giles Harrison finishing superbly following a good passing move, and some tenacious play on the edge of the box.
Resplendent in the new kit, the Four Marks team continued to play superb passing football, and continually peppered the Mytchett goal, as chances built up. Long range shots from Bob Keough, and Paul Ford narrowly missing the goal. Mytchett, had difficulty in getting out of their own half, and it wasn’t until after 30 minutes that there was any danger to the famed Four Marks defence. A run down the right saw Mytchett break into the box, and a cross come shot was cleared off the line by Ian Davey, only for Nick Brown attempt to regain his own goal crown, by running into the clearance and have it bounce off him for a corner.
Half time came with the score 1-0, the second half saw Martin Birtles replaced by Andy Haggar, and a little way into the half Ian Davey suffered a twisted ankle and was replaced by Chris Williams (with the size of the squad, there are always those who are likely to miss out, and my thanks go to the way those who didn’t play at all accepted the decisions). Mytchett were a little bit more organised in the second half, but despite their good approach play, failed to really threaten the goal. Four Marks continued to threaten an more shots saw the Mytchett goalkeeper busy. A long run from Paul Ford, should have resulted in a goal, but we had to wait for another substitution to finish the game off. Ken Bale came on for Eugene O’Reilly, and from a cross by Andy Haggar audaciously flicked the ball in.
Despite some late pressure by Mytchett, it was a case of job done by Four Marks. A really good all round performance with some lovely passing moves, organised in defence, and prepared to have a go at goal. Man of the Match was Giles Harrison, who appeared to be everywhere on the pitch.
